As I reflect on my journey of teaching overseas, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of gratitude and admiration for my secondary principal, Dr. Mechum Purnell. Dr. Purnell, who is now moving from the Overseas School of Colombo to the American School of Bangkok, has been a pillar of strength and support during my initial years abroad. His leadership have profoundly impacted my professional and personal life, and I am honored to share some of the most memorable moments we have shared.

Joining the Overseas School of Colombo in the same year, it quickly became evident that Dr. Purnell was not just a newcomer like me; he seemed like a seasoned veteran who was already well-acquainted with the school’s environment and ready to offer unwavering support. His presence was reassuring, and his readiness to assist with any challenge I faced made a significant difference in my adjustment to a new teaching landscape.

Dr. Purnell’s support extended beyond the confines of the school. I vividly remember receiving calls from him during difficult times my family and I faced outside of school. His concern and willingness to offer help were genuine and deeply appreciated. It was comforting to know that someone cared not just about my professional well-being but also my personal life.

Friendly, fun, and always open to listen, Dr. Purnell created an environment where I felt comfortable discussing anything related to teaching and learning. His approachable nature and keen interest in the well-being of his staff fostered a supportive and collaborative atmosphere.

As he moves on to the American School of Bangkok, I can’t help but feel a tinge of jealousy for the new teachers who will have the privilege of working with him. However, I am also immensely grateful for the opportunity I had to work under his guidance, especially during my first two years overseas. His mentorship has been invaluable, and I carry the lessons I learned from him with me.

I wish Dr. Mechum Purnell all the best in his new role and look forward to crossing paths with him in the future. Thank you, Dr. Purnell, for being an extraordinary leader. Your impact on my life and career is immeasurable, and you will be greatly missed.
